Well said. For me it’s mental goals including learning new things and seeing new places. My physical training, which I have done all my life, gives me the foundation to do that.

When I was young it was mostly running. But as I get older I find that I have to adjust. Injuries have changed my routine. Less running, more weights, biking and walking. Ironically I am more fit now as I work a wider range of muscles.

But the long term act of being fit is now starting to pay back. As my Platoon Sargent used to say that pain was weakness leaving the body. I think now that the daily brief inconvenient pain of staying fit offsets the life shortening pain of being old and invalid.
