Old Town Warsaw - A Place That Isn’t Old

We take a weekend visit to Warsaw where once again we are reminded of what war can do to a city. And, how it can be rebuilt and reborn.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I made a trip to Warsaw. She is from there and we were both looking to escape from the rural country village of Bydlino, our home for the last few years. Warsaw is a four and half hour train ride from the nearby town of Slupsk. we traveled on a Friday morning and checked in to a small B&B on the third floor above a coffee shop in Old Town Warsaw. It is there, I could not see, but could sense the impact of total war.

We spent the weekend visiting parks, walking back streets and taking in all that is Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Old Town sits at the center of it all. An architectural marvel displaying the castles and palaces created by past kings of Poland, old squares that line the cobble stone plazas and red brick walls of the castles that once dominated the Vistula river that flows through Warsaw. It is an old part of the city that has been there since the 1500, except that it isn't old at all.
