…. A joke/trope we often recite is about our diversity and camaraderie versus the American populace. Walk inside any military barracks and you’ll have a black friend dancing cha-cha to Bad Bunny because your Puerto Rican friend is DJ. Your Indian buddy is making naan for the country boy who’s never heard of it. The Russian guy is admitting that whiskey isn’t so bad, and your other buddy is trying to teach you a game he grew up playing in Vietnam. Despite the bad, and the ultimate reason we even have a military, there’s a lot of beauty.

America is a concept, not a place. My Marines were very much a mixed and eclectic lot….and they all were serving in the belief that we were all one. They were not the type that could articulate the abstracts of freedom. But they all believed in it. Thanks for writing this.
